Announcing the 2008 Chapter Partner Program - Sign up now for maximum exposure!

The Chicago Chapter recently launched its 2008 Chapter Partner sponsorship program.  The Chapter Partner program provides program and operating support for the Chapter's nearly 100 programs, events, and initiatives while providing start-up support for new initiatives.  With the Chapter's membership doubling in a year's time (we have over 800 members as of December 2008) and with growing interest in green building in our region, the Chapter has added several new committees this year to its already active list of nine committees, including Residential Green Building, Special Events, and a Suburban Outreach Committee focused on expanding the Chapter's programs and resources to wider reaches of our Chicagoland service region.  Chapter Partners make these programs and initiatives possible.  Currently, Chapter Partners support nearly one quarter of the Chapter's budget.

As you will see on the attached link below, the Chapter acknowledges Chapter Partners in print and electronic media as well as through complimentary memberships and tickets to Chapter events.  In addition to the variety of other marketing exposure, Chapter Partners contributing $5,000 or more will be recognized as presenting sponsors for the Chapter's two large fundraising events slated for 2008, the Emerald Gala and the Natural Leaders Luncheon, which collectively will attract over 1,000 people.

If you have questions about the program or are interested in supporting the Chapter, please contact Doug Widener, Executive Director, at 773-265-5911.

June 5th -- Chicago Botanic Garden to Host World Environment Day
Back to Top

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) has selected the Chicago Botanic Garden as the sole North American host venue for World Environment Day 2008.  Commemorated each year on June 5th, World Environment Day is one of the principal vehicles through which the United Nations stimulates worldwide awareness of the environment and enhances political attention and action.  The World Environment Day slogan for 2008 is Kick the Habit! Towards a Low Carbon Economy.  At the Chicago Botanic Garden and at the venues around the world, events will highlight resources and initiatives that promote low carbon economies and lifestyles, such as improved energy efficiency, alternative energy sources, forest conservation, and eco-friendly consumption.  The choice of the Chicago area reflects international recognition of efforts to make the Chicago region the nation's greenest metropolitan area.

Plans call for a day-long celebration at the Chicago Botanic Garden that will include a few major events:

  • A "Knowledge and Action" marketplace where non-profit, academic and student, government, cultural, and environmental organizations will demonstrate the many ways that individuals, businesses and governmental bodies can help reduce their carbon footprint.
  • All visitors to the Regenstein Fruit & Vegetable Garden will leave with an easy-to-grow, carbon-absorbing plant.
  • At the McGinley Pavilion, Bayer Corporation will sponsor the unveiling of UNEP's International Children's Painting Competition (ICPC) exhibition (a signature World Environment Day initiative) and a special awards ceremony for ICPC entrants in North America and Chicago.
  • An afternoon plenary session will bring together local, regional, national, and international experts on global warming and climate change to discuss steps individuals from across the region, the nation, and the world must take to reduce their carbon footprint.

USGBC Doubles Local LEED for Homes Network - Growth Driven by Surging Interest in Green Homes

Green homes, on average, save 30-50% on energy bills and reduce CO2 emissions by a similar amount.  They also use less water, create less waste, and have dramatically better indoor environmental quality.  The result is lower utility bills and a healthier, better place to live.  For more information, click here.

This committee is well under way in planning events for 2008.  On April 24th, they will be hosting a Chicago Green Buildings Trolley Tour for government officials and developers.  The sites on the agenda include the City Hall green roof, Northwestern Prentice Women's Hospital, Center on Halsted, and Loyola University's Information Commons, as well as a quick stop at one of Chicago's Green Alleys.  A total of four tours are scheduled for this year with two urban tours and two suburban tours.

In the planning phase are two Government Roundtable / Panel discussions, as well as various Outreach Programs geared towards city and suburban officials.  The committee is excited to start working with the new Suburban Committees, the Central Illinois Chapter, and other environmental and government groups in planning additional outreach events.

Be sure to keep an eye out for the legislation and policy updates in Green Bytes and on the web site.  The committee is working hard to keep this information up to date so the Chapter Membership have a reliable source of information on bills that may interest them.

Homing in on Green - Jumpstarting the Demand for Eco-Friendly Housing in Chicago

The USGBC - Chicago Chapter hosts not only a Chapter Business Meeting, but a special event that features an open forum to explore the methods, programs, organizations, and resources available to encourage sustainable housing.  This event is being held in Chicago on Thursday evening and in Lisle on Friday morning.  The panel discussion and Chapter Business meeting will be the same with the intent on giving attendees in the Chicagoland area an opportunity to attend at the venue that is most conveniently located.

The panel features members from USGBC (Mike Holcomb), NAHB (Bill Styczynski), Energy Star (Jim Cavallo), and Chicago Green Home Program (Anthony Corso) and will be moderated by Jim Hackler.  The main topics of discussion will be:

  • Understanding the variety of approaches to sustainable housing.
  • Fostering cooperation and education among the different groups advocating green homes.
  • Removing market barriers and increasing demand for sustainable housing.

The forum is not an endorsement of a single approach - but it's hoped will lead to an including strategy to bring more sustainable housing to the Chicago area.  The moderator, Jim Hackler, brings a balanced approach to the discussion as a journalist covering environmental issues for GreenBuilder, Natural Home, and Delta's Sky magazines.  He also has served as the head of two of the country's leading green building initiatives (USGBC's LEED for Homes and the Greater Atlanta HBA's EarthCraft House).
