Welcome to the 2015 Green Roof Challenge:
Pursuing healthy built environments.

Imagine buildings that are elegant and that clean our air and water. Imagine a building that is informed by its bioregion's characteristics and that

  • Reduces storm water runoff
  • Filters and cleans storm water runoff
  • Reduces carbon emissions in the air and produces oxygen
  • Reduces the urban heat island effect
  • Filters harmful airborne particulates, and
  • Creates microclimates and increases biodiversity

The USGBC Charlotte Region Chapter issues a challenge to all civic leaders, building owners, architects, engineers, design professionals, and construction tradesmen to build green roofs and renovate existing structures to incorporate vegetative roof systems to help combat Charlotte's increasing storm water runoff problems, growing urban heat island issues, and improve our region's air quality.

By 2015, the USGBC Charlotte Region Chapter challenges the City of Charlotte to have incorporated vegetative roof systems on 20% of all new construction, and 5% of existing renovated facilities.

Green roof systems are an extension of the existing roof, which involves a high quality waterproofing, root repellant system, drainage system, filter cloth, lightweight growing medium and plants. Green roof technologies provide building owners with a proven return on investment, and also represent opportunities for significant economic, social and environmental benefits.
