QUESTIONNAIRE
In general, why do you wish to be a member of the Charlotte Region Chapter Board and what opportunities do you see for the Chapter?
The profession I chose allows me to assist designers in creating the built environment. I am fortunate to work for a company that embraces the notion that we are not just builders but responsible for the quality of the environment which people will live and work in for many years to come. I hope to strengthen the Charlotte Chapter by providing a conduit to share best practices learned from USGBC chapters across the nation to help foster cooperation between other industry specific organizations, ( AASHE, ASHE, CEFPI,). The local business community has gained a lot through the efforts already established by the Chapter. Cooperation with the education establishment, advocacy with businesses and the continued efforts of government to embrace environmentally responsible planning and development will provide opportunities for the chapter in the coming years.
Please provide a summary of your current and past involvement in the Chapter. Include attendance at Chapter events and contributions to Chapter committees.
I relocated to Charlotte a year ago assigned with the task of establishing a new regional office for Adolfson & Peterson. To date my involvement with the Chapter has been limited as my time and focus has been dedicated to opening an office, hiring staff and establishing a presence in the region. Adolfson & Peterson is committed to the success of the USGBC. Nationally the company has trained and accredited over 150 professionals and placed more than $400M in LEED submitted or certified projects. Company leadership consistently provides resources to uphold the mission of the USGBC, with regional emphasis. These statistics are shared as testimony that, moving forward, the Charlotte chapter will receive the same level of corporate and local support.
Please provide a summary of your professional qualifications, knowledge and experience of most relevance to the Chapter. Also indicate the degree to which you have senior management and executive level experience.
Since graduation, with a bachelor’s degree in construction management, I have spent 24 years in the construction industry. Starting as Project Engineer through to Senior Project Manager my work has encompassed the full spectrum of the tasks and responsibilities of the construction process. During this time I experienced the emergence of sustainable design and building. A LEED Accredited Professional since 2005 I have worked as a Project Manager on some of the many LEED certified projects in the Adolfson & Peterson portfolio. As such I directed the construction teams’ comprehensive approach to sustainable building practices and strategies. As Vice President of Operations of the Charlotte regional office I am currently a senior member of the company’s management team.
The Charlotte Region Chapter is committed to strengthening its membership diversity. What resources could you bring to bear (e.g., demonstrated expertise, leadership positions, and willingness) to help further Chapter participation from high priority sectors including: real estate, energy/utility, finance/insurance, residential, corporate, and product manufacturing? You can also address other sectors you think require greater involvement in the Chapter.
Adolfson & Peterson has relationships, experience and national exposure in these priority sectors with leadership roles in energy task forces, green manufacturing legislative initiatives, municipal planning committees, etc. As I am relatively new to the region it is my intent to bring, not only the drive and desire for this endeavor, but the ability to draw on the full collective expertise Adolfson & Peterson has to offer.
One sector that might be beneficial to pursue in the Charlotte regional is the educational segment. Adolfson & Peterson is very involved with this sector as a builder and sustainability steward. We participate in regional school organizations and have members in the Council of Educational Facility Planners International and the Society for College and University Planning. We are part of LEED for Schools and are working on pilot programs to help develop green curriculum for students.
The religious sector is another that could be tapped for greater regional involvement. The Interfaith Power and Light campaign is national religious organization founded in response to global warming. Our Arizona office is currently steering resources to help its local chapter get established.
