Green Building: Nuts and Bolts for Contractors
Back to Top

Contractors often feel like a deer in headlights when they receive a set of drawings and specifications for a project that required LEED Certification.  The first thing that comes to mind is money -- what is this going to cost me, how much time will this take, what is my role, and what am I supposed to do anyway?  To help answer those questions, the Chicago Chapter Education / Research Committee and Wilbur Wright College created a program called Green Building: The Nuts and Bolts for Contractors.  The course was launched in February 2006 and, since then, over 350 individuals (contractors, manufacturers, developers, facility managers, designers, architects, engineers, trade union reps, lawyers, realtors, educators, etc.) representing over 100 different companies have attended.

Attendees are introduced to the USGBC and the LEED Green Building Rating System.  The course covers every aspect of the LEED green building rating system, emphasizing those credits that contractors will be most involved in - sustainable site development, water efficiency, energy efficiency and commissioning, construction waste management and green materials, and indoor environmental management.  At the conclusion of the course, participants learn how to put it all together as part of the green team.

Contractors are important participants in the green building process.  By taking this course, contractors can become knowledgeable members of the design and construction team and learn how to successfully build green and LEED buildings.  Sessions are currently scheduled for March 28th and April 25th at Wilbur Wright College.

LEED for Homes Workshop April 15th - REGISTER NOW!

LEED for Homes is a rating system that promotes the design and construction of high-performance green homes.  A green home uses less energy, water, and natural resources, creates less waste, and is healthier and more comfortable for the occupants.  Benefits of a LEED home include lower energy and water bills, reduced greenhouse gas emissions, and less exposure to mold, mildew, and other indoor toxins.  The net cost of owning a LEED home is comparable to that of owning a conventional home.

This full-day program, being held on April 15th from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM at the Merchandise Mart, provides key concepts needed for successful participation in the LEED for Homes initiative.  Learn about the rating system, green design and construction practices, certification and verification procedures, benefits, and costs of LEED homes.

Announcing the 2008 Chapter Partner Program - Sign up now for maximum exposure!

The Chicago Chapter recently launched its 2008 Chapter Partner sponsorship program.  The Chapter Partner program provides program and operating support for the Chapter's nearly 100 programs, events, and initiatives while providing start-up support for new initiatives.  With the Chapter's membership doubling in a year's time (we have over 800 members as of December 2008) and with growing interest in green building in our region, the Chapter has added several new committees this year to its already active list of nine committees, including Residential Green Building, Special Events, and a Suburban Outreach Committee focused on expanding the Chapter's programs and resources to wider reaches of our Chicagoland service region.  Chapter Partners make these programs and initiatives possible.  Currently, Chapter Partners support nearly one quarter of the Chapter's budget.

As you will see on the attached link below, the Chapter acknowledges Chapter Partners in print and electronic media as well as through complimentary memberships and tickets to Chapter events.  In addition to the variety of other marketing exposure, Chapter Partners contributing $5,000 or more will be recognized as presenting sponsors for the Chapter's two large fundraising events slated for 2008, the Emerald Gala and the Natural Leaders Luncheon, which collectively will attract over 1,000 people.  Sign up by March 24th to ensure maximum exposure in the Chapter's print materials, including the Chapter brochure and save the date cards for the 2008 Emerald Gala.

If you have questions about the program or are interested in supporting the Chapter, please contact Doug Widener, Executive Director, at 773-265-5911.

More Information

Green buildings are designed and constructed to minimize their impact on the environment while providing a comfortable and efficient structure for the building occupants.  The green building movement is taking off in the Chicagoland area.  Each year sees an increase in the number of green or sustainable building projects.  Many of these buildings are being built to LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) standards.  Others simply include sound environmental and energy efficiency principles.

Site supervisors, managers, and foremen in the construction industry need to know how to direct the application and implementation of these concepts and technologies on the construction site and in the office.  Moreover, they must be able to integrate functions, procure specialized materials and services, and document the activities leading to a certified and commissioned structure.

This workshop is designed to educate the construction community about green building procedures and strategies, the LEED rating system, and the requirements that need to be met on the construction site and in the office to achieve a certified structure.

Workshop topics include:

Why green building is important - market forces, economics, building codes, policies, and incentives.

The green building team and the contractor's role in the following:

  • sustainable site construction methods
  • considerations of energy and water efficiency
  • building commissioning
  • construction waste management
  • procurement and documentation of green building materials
  • construction for good indoor air quality
  • documentation for LEED credits

Instructors for this workshop include LEED accredited contractors and architects who are active members of the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago Chapter and who have extensive experience in designing, building, commissioning, and documenting green and LEED buildings.

Parking is free.

Fee includes a take-home binder, breakfast, and lunch.

Please join the newly established South Suburban Committee of the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago Chapter at the Sugar Creek Administration Center in Joliet for a social event, guest speaker, and introduction into the U.S. Green Building Council - Chicago Chapter.  This will be a great event to learn more about sustainable design, involvement in our organization, and meet some great new people.

The evening will begin with networking and light appetizers.  The presentation will start with announcements from the South Suburban Committee of the USGBC - Chicago Chapter.  They will talk about who they are, what they're doing, why they're doing it, and when you'll see them next.  They will be looking for your input on future program topics and location, so come ready to share your ideas.  The main speaker will talk about the green architecture used in the Sugar Creek Administration Center.

The Sugar Creek Administration Center was designed following the USGBC's LEED guidelines and exhibits a high performance building, sustainable design, water saving technology, energy efficiency, material selection, and indoor environmental quality.  It features extensive landscaping, natural wetlands, and a habitat for wildlife.  Finally, it serves as an educational tool for everyone involved and interested in learning about green technologies.
