The U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) is the nation’s foremost coalition of leaders from every sector of the building industry working to promote buildings that are environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy places to live and work. Our more than 7,500 member organizations and our network of 75 regional chapters are united to advance our mission of transforming the building industry to sustainability. 

Locally, the Chapter furthers the work of USGBC through our diverse membership of over 350 persons from across the building industry, offering a variety of educational programs, policy discussions, green building tours, and other events to promote green building within the region.  Annually the Chapter offers more than 50 programs and events.

Core Purpose


The U.S. Green Building Council's core purpose is to transform the way buildings and communities are designed, built and operated, enabling an environmentally and socially responsible, healthy, and prosperous environment that improves the quality of life.

Position Description

USGBC—Chicago Chapter is looking for committed individuals to assist in an administrative capacity to maintain quality service to individuals interested in the Council, its programs, and the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.               

Responsibilities                                           

  1. Assist with data entry
  2. Administer USGBC phone and email inquiries
  3. Work with staff and volunteers to assist with member and sponsor mailings
  4. Assist with program registration
  5. Manage membership renewal process
  6. Assist with other administrative tasks as necessary

Qualifications

  1. Minimum age is 18 years old
  2. Willingness to learn new information
  3. Must be friendly, dependable, and flexible
  4. Must enjoy interacting with the public and communicate effectively with individuals
  5. Ability to work independently and solve problems or contact staff when appropriate
  6. Working knowledge of MS Office software, particularly MS Word, Excel, Access, and PowerPoint. 
Commitment

A regular commitment as a USGBC volunteer is essential to not only the needs of the board and staff, but also to the continuing excellence of the Chapter’s programs and membership. The commitment required for this position is:

  1. Position requires at least four hours per week
  2. If you cannot make your commitment, you must notify your USGBC contact prior to the start of your shift at ­­773-265-5911.

The USGBC-Chicago booth will be in the green living section of the show and will focus on USGBC, LEED, the Chicago Chapter, and Greenbuild 2007 which will be hosted in Chicago, November 7-9, 2007.

The Chicago Chapter of USGBC will have information booths at the following upcoming expos/trade shows this spring. 

Volunteer shifts are 4 hours in length 9am-1pm and 1pm to 5pm.  Volunteers should have a working knowledge of USGBC and the LEED green building rating system as well as the Chicago Chapter and its programs. If you have ever wanted to be a part of the largest conference on green building, now is your chance. As the theme of Greenbuild 2007 is 'Accelerating Green Communities', we need to accelerate volunteer participation on a massive scale. On the Chapter Forum, the sub-committee responsibilities are posted for you to review any potential volunteer opportunities. There will be an opportunity for every size and type of commitment for volunteers. Please take a moment to consider volunteering and serving your Chapter during this exciting time.

Job Description:

Today marks the first Earth Day since GreenBean's launch in July 2006. In celebration, we're preparing to expand our coverage to the Chicago metro area. To build that capacity, we're seeking folks interested in contributing their own posts on suburban projects.

Candidates should be knowledgable of the suburban green building market, have sufficient technical expertise to evaluate the validity and novelty of green building claims, and be capable of preparing concise but insightful project analyses. If that sounds like you, please submit a writing sample and qualifications no later than May 20, 2007 to Erik Olsen. This is a volunteer position.
