Planning for a Sustainable Future:
A Guide for Local Governments

This handbook is designed to aid municipalities in going green by sharing success stories and approaches to becoming sustainable.

On October 3rd, President Bush signed into law the much publicized bailout legislation (H.R. 1424). As part of the legislation, there were three separate tax acts, including the Energy Improvement and Extension Act of 2008 (2008 Energy Act). Environmental high points of the bailout include:

Commercial Wind and Solar Credits Extended and Enhanced
Solar Credits Expanded To Include Small Wind Turbines for Homeowners
Energy-Efficient Commercial Building Property Credit Extended
Changes to Energy-Related Tax Credit Bonds
Other Provisions:

A carbon dioxide sequestration (reduction) credit
A tax incentive to purchase plug-in electric vehicles
A new fringe benefit to employees who are bicycle commuters
