USGBC Flatwater Chapter selects a Green Schools Advocate

The USGBC Flatwater Chapter is pleased to announce the selection of Steve Laughlin as our chapter’s Green Schools Advocate.

Mr. Laughlin is a senior design architect at Leo A Daly, and has been with the company for 30 years. He received a bachelor’s degree from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln College of Architecture in 1974 and a master’s degree from the University of California, Berkeley College of Design in 1982.  

Mr. Laughlin has had a long-time interest in energy conservation and environmental stewardship.  

In 1979, he designed and illustrated the book “Path to Passive,” by Solar Energy Associates.  Mr. Laughlin was Leo A Daly’s first Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED®) accredited professional and conducted the company’s first LEED® training program.

Leo A Daly currently has over 125 LEED® accredited professionals firmwide.  Mr. Laughlin is co-director of Leo A Daly’s Sustainable Facilities Design

and co-director of Leo A Daly’s K-12 Facilities Design.  He currently is working on the Leo A Daly 2030 initiative task forc

 

Steve's role will include networking with local school districts to mobilize chapter efforts to advocate green schools to local school boards and state boards of education. He will present the case for green schools to decisions makers, local media, and other stakeholders including PTA programs.  He will be a great resource for our chapter and our community.

SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT

 

Position opening:      Communications Officer

 

The Flatwater Chapter, of the U.S. Green Building Council is seeking one or more qualified volunteers for the chapter’s Communications Officer.  Interested Flatwater members are asked to email, Tim Hemsath, Vice-Chair at, themsath@gmail.com, describing their abilities and interest to handle the either all or some of the responsibilities outlined below.  This volunteer position will remain open until filled.

 

Duties and responsibilities:     

 

The responsibility of the communications officer is to oversee the external communications of the chapter.  Volunteer should be or immediately become a due paying member of the chapter.

 

Specific duties include:

-          Management of all outgoing email correspondence for the public list-serve and members distribution list, periodic check of incoming emails to Flatwater email address

-          Dissemination, graphic design and content composition of monthly newsletter

-          Web content creation and management, graphic design of the Flatwater website, http://chapters.usgbc.org/flatwater

-          Attendance at programmed events is encouraged to document activities and assist in the promotion and development of the chapter

-          Participation in a few board meetings offering circle reports regarding the status of chapter communications

 

The communications officer plays a vital and valuable role to the members of the chapter.  Term of service for this position is one year, renewable for additional one-year terms upon request to the Board of Directors.   Leadership training, mentorship, advancement and access to specialized chapter resources are benefits of this position.  Communications Officer serves at the discretion of the Board of Directors.
