Program:USGBC Iowa Chapter, Center on Sustainable Communities (COSC), and the Iowa Department of Economic Development are hosting George Bialecki, Jr. to the Des Moines area on Thursday, April 16th from 1:30-3:00 p.m. at the Capitol Hill Lutheran Church 511 Des Moines Street, Des Moines.
Mr. Bialecki, Jr. is Principal of Alternative Energy Builders (AEB) of Chicago, IL. AEB is a construction company that was formed to develop and build sustainable, energy-healthy communities. In 2004, when AEB was formed it was recognized by the EPA as receiving the first Energy Star Certification for an assisted living and adult community in the nation. He views the home as a “living organism”, which breathes, absorbs environmental elements and produces waste. He has pioneered a building practice he refers to as Home Biology 101.
In addition to his commitment to preserving the environment and energy, he also owns and operates a pediatric home care agency and an assisted living company. A-Plus Health Care Services focuses on high tech nursing care for special needs children while Amber Ridge Assisted Living is a premier residential home-like setting for seniors seeking services as to alternative traditional institutional environments. Amber Ridge development is in Moline, IL and working on a second one near the Quad cities. Mr. Bialecki has ties to Iowa and in particular to Des Moines. His company, Bialecki Drilling is the contractor for the geothermal construction of the new e300 Development, a six-story residential and commercial building at East Fourth Street and East Grand Avenue.
Most notably in the last year, Mr. Bialecki, in conjunction with Alternative Energy Living Foundation, has had the distinguished honor to represent the United States this summer at the 2008 Beijing Olympics in an International Sustainable Community. This community will be represented by 10 nations with each building a home to represent the environmental advancements in housing. This community is a demonstration project and is sponsored by the Ministry of Construction of the People’s Republic of China.
Mr. Bialecki, a graduate from Marquette University, has been nominated for the prestigious “Stars of Energy Efficiency” award given by the Alliance to Save Energy. He is also a member of Energy Star, Alliance to Save Energy, Geothermal Heat Pump Consortium, Global Energy, USGBC, and the Environmental and Energy Studies Institute. Most recently he has been asked to be on the Board of Advisors for the Biomass Coordinating Council and the Consumer Energy Alliance.

Event: Quarterly Meeting

Program: Iowa State Senator Rob Hogg - Iowa Green Building Legislation
Senate File 2084 would provide a tax credit on personal and corporate income tax for the construction or rehabilitation of buildings that obtain silver certification or higher under the leadership in energy and environmental design standards of the United States Green Building Council. The tax credits would equal 1% or more of the costs of the construction or rehabilitation. SF2084 also requires schools and state buildings to meet LEED silver certification or higher unless it is determined that it is "not practicable for the project." The bill is now pending in the Senate Ways and Means Committee. The subcommittee assigned to the bill includes Senator Matt McCoy (D-Des Moines), subcommittee chair, Senator Becky Schmitz (D-Fairfield), and Senator Mark Zieman (R-Postville).
