Making Communities Greener through Retrofitting
By Ananda O'Brien and Sarah Mojzer With the downturn in the post-credit crunch era, the status of green new development in Nevada may be unclear. However, retrofitting buildings, a less evident aspect of green building, is an increasing trend that has great potential to contribute to the community as well as to companies' bottom line. Continued gains are forecasted for LEED-EB: O&M (Existing Buildings: Operations and Management) as the green market shifts from new construction to the built sector, which might help offset what could be a heavy drop in LEED activity associated with struggling construction sector.
Barry Giles with Building Wise LLC gave a presentation on Existing Building: Operation & Maintenance (EBOM) at the northern Nevada luncheon of the USGBC - Nevada Chapter January 27 and discussed how the revamped rating system helps building owners and operators measure operations, improvements and maintenance on a consistent scale, with the goal of maximizing operational efficiency while minimizing environmental impacts. LEED for Existing Buildings addresses whole-building cleaning and maintenance issues (including chemical use), recycling programs, exterior maintenance programs, and systems upgrades. (read more)
