Mayor Bill Purcell to Address Local U.S. Green Building Council Chapter April 26

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – April 24, 2007 – The Middle Tennessee Chapter of the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) today announced that Mayor Bill Purcell will address its members at its upcoming monthly meeting on April 26 at the Adventure Science Center. He will briefly discuss the development of Nashville and the City’s efforts toward a sustainable and green future.

Mayor Purcell recently signed the U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement, joining more than 300 other mayors from around the United States in an effort to:

  • Strive to meet or beat the Kyoto Protocol targets in their own communities, through anti-sprawl land-use policies, urban forest restoration projects, public information campaigns, and other actions;
  • Urge state and federal government to enact policies and programs to meet or beat the greenhouse gas emission reduction target suggested for the United States in the Kyoto Protocol -- 7% reduction from 1990 levels by 2012; and
  • Urge the U.S. Congress to pass the bipartisan greenhouse gas reduction legislation, which would establish a national emission trading system.
(Details on this effort are available at www.usmayors.org/climateprotection.)

The meeting is open to the public. For more information or if you plan to attend, please contact Jamie Qualk at (615) 306-4012.

When: Thursday, April 26th - 11:30am Registration, 12:00-1:00pm Lunch and Presentation.

Where: The Tennessee Engineering Center (in the Adventure Science Center), located at 800 Fort Negley Blvd. Nashville, TN 37203.

PUBLIC WORKSHOP ON GREEN BUILDING IN METRO NASHVILLE

March 2nd, 2007

The Nashville Civic Design Center will hold a public workshop on Wednesday, March 7th, 2007 from 5:30 – 7:30 p.m. at the Nashville Downtown Public Library to gather public input regarding the implementation of sustainable building practices in Nashville and Davidson County.  The Nashville Downtown Public Library is located at 615 Church Street.

This public meeting is held in response to a recent Metropolitan County Council resolution requesting that the Nashville Civic Design Center “facilitate a series of community discussions regarding the implementation of sustainable building practices in Nashville and Davidson County.  These discussions should include a broad cross-section of persons from the public and private sector, and should focus on determining the most appropriate methods for incorporating green building design practices in the construction and renovation of both government and private buildings.”

Briley posturing to become Nashville’s ‘Green Mayor’

By Bill Harless, bharless@nashvillecitypaper.com

February 16, 2007

Instead of being the sidewalk mayor, Councilman-at-Large David Briley may be positioning himself as the green mayor.

Briley, a Metro mayoral candidate, presented a seven-point environmental policy Thursday.

Briley said he would demand Metro building projects meet environmental standards, work to provide incentives for private firms to build the same, make a strong push for the public acquisition of open space, incentivize use of low-emission vehicles and have the city plant at least 1,000 trees each year, among other initiatives.

“I want to build upon the traditions established by Mayors Bredesen and Purcell and establish sustainable policies that protect our environment and natural resources, lessen our dependence on fossil fuels and foreign energy sources and engage the entrepreneurial spirit of our business community — I want to be know as Nashville’s ‘Green Mayor,’ Briley said at a press conference at the public square downtown.

Step It Up 2007

February 13th, 2007

Bill McKibben is starting a movement and we are working together to invite your support and participation. Bill wrote early and often about the perils posed by climate change and we both feel it is the single greatest threat to civilization. So far, save for one march last year, there have been no mass protests, no large-scale gatherings of humanity to signal this dilemma and call for its prevention.

On April 14, a new organization called Step It Up 2007 is inviting organizations to hold rallies and events across the country. So far, over 300 events are planned in 39 states.

Please go to http://stepitup2007.org/ and join one or create an event in your community. It can be as humble as a sign, as entertaining as theater, or as bold as a mass demonstration.

This National Day of Climate Action could be an unparalleled event, drawing together people of every creed, color, and background. If we can create events in every town and city in the U.S., nothing could say more to our Congress and President.

We have all the tools in place to address climate change and avert a disaster, all except one: the resolve and voice of the American people willing to form a movement. That's us. April 14, 2007 is the day. Your community is the place. http://stepitup2007.org/ is the hub. And we are so grateful.
