Congratulations to the
Growing Green Award Winners!
USGBC-STL is pleased to present the winners of the inaugural Growing Green Awards!

Last week, USGBC-STL held our first-ever Growing Green Award Celebration to recognize the individuals, companies and organizations that are transforming the built environment in a more environmentally responsible, profitable and healthy place. The event exceeded expectations with a sold out crowd of 200! Originally expecting three to four nominations in each of the seven categories, the planning committee was overwhelmed with categories containing up to nineteen nominations.

Kyle Hunsberger, Director of Construction for Habitat for Humanity St. Louis delivered a keynote address on the importance of building sustainably and announced the fantastic news that Habitat for Humanity St. Louis recently achieved LEED Platinum Certification on 27 homes in the City of St. Louis!

Missouri State Historic Tax Credits Threatened
We reported on green building specific legislation in the March e-news, most of which continues to march forward in the Missouri legislature.

Currently, Senate Bill 45 threatens a number of state tax credits and includes restrictions on both Historic Tax Credits and Brownfield Tax Credits. And what's more green than protecting and reusing our historic buildings and redeveloping and revitalizing potentially contaminated land in the urban core? Let's not forget that "reduce, reuse and recycle" applies to buildings and property too!

Missouri is known nation-wide for our historic tax credits. According to the Park Service's 2007 report, Missouri is
  • first in the nation with 189 federal historic rehab tax credit projects successfully completed in 2007, and
  • first in the nation with almost $535 million in up-front investment in labor and materials for the federal historic rehab tax credit projects completed in 2007
Learn more about Senate Bill 45 on the Missouri Coalition for Historic Preservation and Economic Development website. Or if you have some time on your hands, read the entire bill and let your state senator and representative know what you think about it!

Green building, energy efficiency and renewable energy are hot topics among our Missouri lawmakers this year. Check out Missouri Votes Conservation's website for a broader (and much longer!) list of legislation.
