LEED AP Changes Coming Soon!
The calls are already coming in - when will the LEED AP exam change? How will it change? What do you mean there are two tiers? Will I still be a LEED AP if I've taken and passed the exam?

In an effort to get you information before we play 20 Question by phone and/or e-mail . . .

New LEED AP Exams, yes exams
With the launch of LEED 2009 in early 2009, the LEED Accredited Professional (AP) program will also change. A three-tiered system will be implemented:
  • LEED Green Associate
  • LEED Accredited Professional (AP) with specialization in commercial design & construction; commercial operations & maintenance; commercial interiors; residential design & construction and neighborhood development
  • LEED AP Fellow
You will have to take and pass the LEED Green Associate Exam before you are eligible for a specialized LEED AP exam. Additionally, professional experience on at least one LEED project is required to take a specialized LEED AP Exam. For more information about the new LEED Credentialing Program, please see the Green Buidling Certification Institute (GBCI) and LEED Credentialing FAQs.

According to the GBCI website:
  • The LEED Green Associate exam and the LEED AP Operations & Maintenance Exam launch in Spring 2009
  • LEED AP Homes Exam, LEED AP Design and Construction, LEED AP Interior Design and Construction and the new credentialing maintenance program  launch in Summer 2009.
PLEASE NOTE: No date has been given for when the current LEED NC and CI exams will expire. See GBCI's LEED Credentialing Program timeline and USGBC's LEED 2009 timeline for more information.

If you are currently a LEED AP:

  • You will remain a LEED AP and be referred to as a Legacy LEED AP.
  • You WILL NOT have to retake the exam.
  • Beginning in June 2009, all current LEED APs (Legacy LEED APs) will need to "opt-in" by agreeing to USGBC's disciplinary policy and agreeing to credential maintenance (continuing education).
  • If you do not "opt-in" within two years, you will resign your status as a Legacy LEED AP.
  • There is a $50 bi-annual maintenance fee for continuing education. Legacy LEED APs will get the first two years for free.
  • Legacy LEED APs should make sure that you are listed in the LEED AP directory on the Green Building Certification Institute's website - www.gbci.org. If you are currently a LEED AP and not listed in the directory, please follow these instructions.
Save the Date . . . for Local Green Building Awards!
The Chapter is proud to announce the first annual Growing Green Awards: Transforming the Built Environment!

Growing Green Awards are to honor people or organizations rather than buildings, but sustainable building must be the focus of the nominations. We will officially launch Growing Green Awards: Transforming the Built Environment on Monday, January 12 and will accept nominations until February 16 in six categories: Commercial, Government, Education, Residential, Innovator and Quietly Green.

The public announcement of winners and an awards event will take place on March 31.

Nomination forms for Growing Green Awards: Transforming the Built Environment will be available January 12, 2009.

Sponsorship opportunities are available. For information,  please contact Emily at 314-577-0854 or

Participate in a Transportation Efficiency
Intensity Study
Did you know that worker commutes account for 30% more energy than the building itself? And that for the average new office building built to code, transportation energy use accounts for twice the building's energy?!

The Center for Neighborhood Technology (CNT) in Chicago is taking part in a project with USGBC to develop a matrix that assesses the transportation energy intensity (TEI) of buildings. TEI is a measure of the amount of energy used in getting people to and from a specific building.

CNT is looking for businesses and organizations willing to participate in data collection for the project. Those interested in participating would be asked to supply background information about the building in which they are located and send out an inquiry to building staff asking them to take a short transportation commute survey.

The building does not have to be LEED certified for inclusion in the project. For more information or to participate, please contact Harley Cooper at harley@cnt.org.
