• Quarterly Chapter Update: MN Policies on Energy and Greenhouse Gases

Please join us for the Mississippi Headwaters Chapter’s Quarterly Chapter Update featuring Minnesota Policies on Energy and Greenhouse Gases.  The event will include networking, an overview of Chapter activities and an opportunity to listen to speakers on energy and greenhouse gas policies.Chapter quarterly updates is a new initiative for the Mississippi Headwaters Chapter to update the membership, orient new members, network, and provide an opportunity for a larger scale event similar to the Annual Chapter Meeting typically held in October.

• Green Building Operations & Maintenance: The LEED Implementation Process

This workshop is intended for building owners, operators and maintenance professionals involved in implementing LEED for Existing Buildings: Operations & Maintenance. It walks through the phases of a typical project, using case examples and implementation strategies throughout to reinforce learning and encourage students to apply knowledge to real-life situationsPresented by John Adams.

• LEED®-NC Educational Tour: Elk River Library
The city of Elk River and KKE Architects, Inc. partnered to create this truly unique public facility that has submitted to the USGBC in hopes of achieving LEED-NC Gold level status. This educational event will highlight the key features that help make this facility both fiscally and environmentally responsible within the structure of the LEED certification program. Some of these elements include: rain gardens for reduced runoff into storm sewers, water efficient landscaping for a 50% reduction in potable water irrigation, reflective roofing for reduced heat island effect, bicycle storage to reduce automobile use, displacement ventilation for cleaner fresher air, geothermal energy reducing the typical load by 61% and an impressive amount of daylight reaching over 95% of the regularly occupied spaces. • Midtown Greenway Volunteer Tree Planting
The Midtown Greenway encompasses a wide variety of environments along its 5.5 miles. The landscape currently varies from wide-open spaces to bounded steep slopes, from sunny to shady stretches, and from sections that abut buildings on the trail level to areas that are enclosed in a trench and green spaces. Arbor Day tree planting has taken place along the Midtown Greenway since 2000. Each year the Coalition organizes hundreds of volunteers to participate in this amazing community effort.

• LEED® V3 Updates and South Education Center Tour

LEED Version 3 covers the changes being implemented in 2009 by the USGBC with regard to the Rating Systems, LEED Online and the New Certification Model. In addition the USGBC has revamped the LEED Credentialing Program to better represent your specific area of expertise as a LEED AP. Join us for an informative presentation from our Minnesota Chapter Executive Director, Sheri Brezinka to learn about all these exciting changes.
 
Then learn how our gracious host, the Intermediate School District #287, created a uniquely sustainable education center with the help of the design team from TSP, Inc., The Weidt Group energy consultants and Xcel Energy’s Design Assistance Program. The South Education Center utilizes a $450,000 geothermal energy system, expected to save as much as $160,000 a year in energy savings, along with many other features that are expected to earn them LEED certification. Tours will follow. AIA Continuing Education Units are pending for this program.

• Fourth Session in our USGBC/BOMA Sustainability Series:  Energy and Atmosphere

Whether you're pursuing a LEED EBOM certification, or just looking for ways to improve the efficiency of your building, this class will provide valuable information about sustainability strategies and the cost savings they provide.
This class will provide you with information about the benefits of retro- and ongoing- commissioning; ASHRAE audits; Energy Star and other locally available programs to enhance your energy performance; and new technologies that will support your sustainability initiatives. • LEED® Tour of Phalen Cub Foods

Developer Oppidan and Kraus-Anderson Construction Company joined forces to create a LEED Certified retail development for the new Phalen Cub Foods in St. Paul.  This 60,000 sf bldg contains many sustainable features including 44 skylights that illuminate 75% of the regularly occupied spaces using a solar-powered GPS tracking system that tracks and redirects sunlight as needed.  This Cub location uses 35% less electricity for lighting than do their typical stores.  Outside the building you will find Minnesota’s first parking lot to be illuminated using only LED lights, which do not need to be replaced for 40 years and provide 50% energy savings.  A sustainable irrigation system compliments the exterior with 50% water savings compared to typical systems.  Join us for a morning tour that will take you behind the scenes and beyond the food and produce isles of this unique facility.

• Emerging Green Builders: Design Competition Awards Ceremony
USGBC-Emerging Green Builders has paired up with Habitat For Humanity for a special design competition that has challenged participants to design environmentally-conscious housing that can be built on a budget, and built primarily by volunteers. Teams have put their brains together, and their pens to the paper to produce innovative and inspiring designs. Please join us as we celebrate their months of hard work!

We are privileged to have guest speaker Kelly Scanlan, Environmental Outreach director for Senator Amy Klobuchar's office. Drinks and hors d'oeuvres will be served, and we will announce the winners of the competition.

• Fifth in our Sustainability Series: Green Cleaning Products and Services
Every building needs janitorial services and "Green Cleaning" is quickly becoming the standard in commercial properties. Cleaning products and services are some of the most important factors affecting indoor environmental quality. As the fifth session in our continuing series on bringing sustainability solutions to your property, this presentation will feature two nationally recognized experts from the professional cleaning services industry. David Holly, a member of the green cleaning consulting firm The Ashkin Group, will present the basics of green cleaning, what to look for in a service provider and an overview of the latest trends in the industry. Rob Kohlhagen, a Director with Johnson Diversey, will navigate through the numerous product designations, chemical best practices and how technology has changed the industry in recent years. • Sustainability Series: IEQ, Purchasing and Waste
The final session in our series on sustainability will focus on two different areas of sustainable commercial building practices: Indoor air quality and waste management. Americans spend more than 90% of our lives indoors. Implementing a proactive indoor air quality program can mitigate risk, increase productivity and improve the working environment for your facility. Kevin Cairns, an industrial hygienist with Applied Environmental Sciences with twenty years experience in the twin cities market, will speak on the economics of IAQ. Adam Fransen, Project Manager with CB Richard Ellis, will speak on managing the waste stream through recycling programs, best practice tracking, and environmentally preferred purchasing. • Emerging Green Builders: Rehbein Environmental Solutions, Inc.
Dan Pingel, of RESI (Rehbein Environmental Solutions, Inc.) will discuss sustainable stormwater management solutions that minimize or eliminate traditional stormwater infrastructure costs. When designed and installed with the EPIC System™, landscape beds, turf areas, parking lots and rooftops can serve as usable spaces that also provide water storage capacity and improved water quality. The EPIC System™ is a living system that provides drainage, storage capacity and pollutant removal. The system also has the capability to reuse water by serving as a subsurface irrigation system. Providing multifunctional spaces for stormwater management can benefit property owners and communities by increasing property value, providing cost effective LEED credits and reducing environmental impacts.

As our first round of Member-to-Member LEED Credit Lectures comes to a close we are gearing up for round two! We have pulled together local industry experts who have graciously volunteered to present information regarding specific LEED credits in a way that can provide us with a deeper understanding of how real world applications earn points. This series of 16 weekly classes covers most of the credits within both the New Construction and Existing Building Operations & Maintenance certification programs. Whether you are currently working on a LEED project, studying to take your LEED-AP test, or just want to gain deeper knowledge, this series is perfect for you.
